I just wondered what the deal was with the beaches in Rio. Is it OK to be topless on Ipanema and Copacabana? Also are there nudist beaches? I like to wear as little as possible - thanks very much. Brazil Hotels and Places to Stay
After visiting the famous beaches of Rio de Janeiro , where the skimpiest amount of cloth passes for a tanga thong bathing suit or the even minuter version called fio dental or dental floss, and beachgoers revel in exposing almost their entire bodies, it isn't surprising that Brazil is one of the few South American countries that has legalized nude or naturist beaches and resorts. This is not without a struggle, though. Brazilian naturism has its following and is rising in popularity with international nudists and naturalists. Panama is a small, conservative country, but does have a lovely nude beach. Contadora Island lies off of Panama's Pacific coast. You can go nude at Playa de las Suecas , a white sand beach in a protected cove. The island is reached by plane on a minute flight from Panama City. Playa Escondida is the only official naturist beach in Argentina. It's a rustic Atlantic beach with dunes and cliffs surrounded by woods and meadows.
A rally in Rio de Janeiro against baring all on the beach saw women take their tops off - but there were more photographers than protesters. A protest against Brazil's ban on topless sunbathing fell flat yesterday, with only a handful of women turning up. She told local media "A breast isn't dangerous! It's false-Puritanism and indicative of our macho culture that we have a law forbidding that women can go topless. The anti-nudity law, which dates back to the s, is punishable by up to a year in prison, or fines. The protest was organised in response to an incident in November when actress Cristina Flores was stopped by police during a half-naked photoshoot on the beach. Topless activists took over Brazil's Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, as a group of Brazilian models, actresses and Brazil's recently elected topless Muses took off their bikinis and shirts for the Toplessaco protest, to end Brazil's prohibition on going topless at the beach. Last month a contest to choose a Topless Muse selected Karla Clemente by popular online vote. Natache Iemanja was also chosen by the jury. The Toplessaco is the second edition of an event, organised by Brazilian women and feminists, that aims to achieve the end of the prohibition against topless sunbathing on Brazil's beaches. The ban carries the threat of a fine and up to one year in prison. Back Back Share.
